BUS THIEF DETAINED AFTER 30 MILE JOYRIDE

Posted: May 27, 2011

A man who took a double-decker bus on a 30 mile joy ride between Barrow and Kendal has been sent to a young offenders institute.

Jamie Hoare will serve 22 months and has been banned from driving for 3 years.

The 20-year old was drunk when he took the vehicle from a depot in Barrow in the early hours of the 23rd of April.

A police chase began after it was spotted in Ulverston before he crashed it inot the Brettagh Holt roundabout.

Hoare – of High Lea Walk in Barrow – was sentenced at Preston Crown Court earlier.

Preston Crown Court heard that the twenty year old had a fixation with public service vehicles, having been convicted on four earlier dates of offences arising from him taking PSVs.

He had been committed to the crown court for sentence, having admitted aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and without insurance and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

The judge told Hoare that he knew from past experience that the courts regarded such offences as extremely serious. The court heard today that at one stage the bus had reached a top speed of sixty eight miles an hour.

He lost control while trying to straighten up following a left turn and hit a grass embankment, resulting in significant damage to the bus after it smashed into a number of trees.

Hoare was found in the driver’s side and went on to be caught more than twice over the drink drive limit.

His lawyer Gareth James said Hoare realised he needed help. The
offences occured at a time he was on prison licence with a condition not to enter the Stagecoach depot at Barrow.
